Post What improvemnents to make to 2002 lawnboy silver pro series
Hello, I just inherited my dads 2002 lawnboy silver pro series, model 10323 with the 6.5hp Duraforce engine. He bought it new in 2003 and I use to mow with it all the time when I still lived at home. Only part we ever had to replace was a new coil. I inherited it when I moved into my house this past month. All I can say is that I love the mower. Love 2 strokes. My questions are: What improvements can be done to increase performance, longgevity, and efficiency? We always ran the Lawnboy ashless 2cycle oil. I now can no longer get it in town, no one carries it anymore. I was thinking about switching to amsoil. What ratio should I run? Should I get the Saber 100:1? Thanks

Hi-

That's a nice Lawnboy, I have a 10247 which is almost the same except it is a push type.

I would strongly recommend you stick to 32:1 or even 20:1 if you want to make that mower last. 100:1 just isn't enough lube volume to give long life. There are examples on the various fourms of engines breaking from these ultra lean oil ratios.

For the oil your can use any TCW3 oil, just make sure there is a "RL####" printed on the back of the bottle. That number is the NMMA approval number.

You can also use a JASO FD oil for air cooled engines. These FD rated oil are also very clean burning and will not cause port blocking.

Stick with 32:1 on your oil. Don't go to 20:1, it is not needed and will just cause more smoke. More is not better in this case. Amsoil Saber and Opti-2 are the only oils I trust at higher ratios but I don't run them on a regular basis. It's just not worth is to me. Actually, I have switched to a ratio of 40:1 with 1 ounce of MMO per gallon as my Lawnboy mix of choice.

You can order Lawnboy oil from acehardwareoutlet. It's 4.60 per can now.

If you cant find the lawn boy oil i recommend just measuring 8 ounces of good quality 2 stroke oil and mixing that with 2 gallons. Many good brands of oil out there. I havent had any problems with stihl brand oil and its pretty easy to find.

Any TCW3 or modern air cooled 2 cycle oil will work fine. I run different oils in all my 9 lawnboys and none have shown issues with the oil at 32:1 except the one running castor based oil. I run it at 40:1.
